Paris.JPG

A few days ago, we brought you a couple of pictures of the upcoming Sony Ericsson Paris. Now, we have some more, well actually a lot more, courtesy of mobile-review.com. A guy over at their forums got some hands-on time with the new device and posted his views on it.

According to him, there aren't too many discernible differences in the new UIQ 3.3 interface and the same goes for the hardware putting it next SE's G700 and G900. He goes on to give a better opinion about its applications and the aGPS with the 5-megapixel camera being a bit better than the one on G900. Here are some confirmed specs of the Paris so far:

  • 5-megapixel camera
  • aGPS and Google Maps and WayFinder
  • WiFi and Bluetooth
  • 2.6-inch screen
  • 960mAH battery
  • QWERTY keyboard/touch-sensitive buttons
  • Widgets Application
  • New browser version
  • Symbian UIQ ver3.3

It wouldn't be wrong to say that 2008 is the year of the touchscreen phones. We have already seen the Xperia X1, the Tube, the 3G iPhone, the Vu, and the awesomeness called Touch Diamond, not to forget the Xenium 800 from Philips. That's pretty much every major cell phone manufacturer out there people! Here's one more touchscreen device from Sony Ericsson, which is codenamed Paris.

The Paris looks to be a slider with a humongous screen and runs on Symbian UIQ 3.3, the latest version of UIQ after it was acquired by Sony Ericsson. As we can garner from the pictures, the phone has a 5-megapixel camera and a QWERTY keypad. There is no info on whether it has HSDPA/HSUPA, GPS, or if the screen is VGA, but if all these points tally up, we will have one more hot contender for the HTC Diamond, don't you think?

W350i.jpgMost of Sony Ericsson phones tend to be on the pricey side, but every once in a while, the company releases a phone that is appealing and affordable to the masses. This time, SE has rolled out the Sony Ericsson W350i Walkman Phone.

The W350i has a small but roomy design. It is fashioned as a small portable music player - hence, its part of Sony Ericsson's ever expanding line of Walkman phones. Xperia X1

It's funny how companies try to keep new products under wraps, and sometimes the most innocent of things reveals them. This time, it's the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 device, a Windows Mobile phone slated for a September 2008 release. That may seem far away, but for those eagerly waiting for the device - you know it's worth it.

The news was leaked thanks to Handango's newsletter. The Xperia X1, which will come with Handango's InHand service built-in, features a WVGA resolution screen (800x480 pixels). Obviously, the phone will be available in multiple languages.

    Sony Ericsson's Beibei

One more Sony Ericsson leak for the day, the daftly codenamed "beibei." It looks like the guys over at Yesky were able to get their hands on an actual device, based on the quality of the pictures available. There isn't much detail available on the device, unlike the P5 and G502 we reported on earlier but what is known is that beibei belongs to the Walkman series from SE and will run on Symbian OS 9.3 with the new UIQ 3.3 user interface (with Demand Paging support). The device has a display smaller than the usual touchscreen phones and curiously more buttons than is the norm for a touchscreen smartphone. Also, from one of the pictures, we can see that the phone does have WiFi connectivity. That's about it as far as the details go about this mysterious device.

Of course, nothing can be confirmed until the official announcement by Sony Ericsson in the future, and we will be sure to let you know when they do. Meanwhile, take a look at some more pictures of "beibei" after the break.

    Alltel Celltop Case Study

    Challenge

As America's largest wireless network, Alltel is known for the strength of its communication services. But the company was looking to do more than simply evolve its existing offerings; it wanted to change the industry itself, moving the mobile device into a position of greater centrality in the lives of its users. It envisioned a world of seamless connectivity between consumers and the information they want most, and tasked frog with generating viable new business concepts that would accomplish this goal.

Photos of Alltel Celltop user interface Photos of Alltel Celltop news and stocks user interface Photos of Alltel Celltop sports user interface

    Process

    Mobile 2.0

To understand the values, needs, and aspirations of consumers in the mobile space, frog’s analysts pored over Alltel user research and conducted in-store interviews with retail managers and customers alike. They then assessed the broader trends at play within the industry. Newcomers to the mobile space indicated a growing emphasis on customization, user access to personal media and online data, and social networking capabilities. In each case, a trend that had begun in the online, PC ecosystem was making the jump to the mobile handset. frog began looking more closely at digital content trends at large, considering how Web 2.0 concepts might be applied to the mobile space.

    Widgetization of the Mobile Space

Just as desktop widgets had provided PC users with simple navigation in the face of expansive content, frog and Alltel set out to create a platform for widgets in the mobile space. The platform, “Celltop,” would provide a shortcut to users’ top content, from personal stocks to the SMS inbox, from local weather to the latest sports scores. Rather than forcing consumers to scroll menus, type search terms, and await connection, Celltop would bring this information to a user’s screen with one touch.

Each Cell offers a half-screen column of graphics, text, and imagery – the color, order, and content of the Cells fully adjustable by the user. In order to provide the simplest possible access to vital information, the application stores a user’s location and preferences, updating relevant Cells upon access.

The Celltop design system was created specifically to communicate the Alltel brand attributes of reliability, simplicity, and service. All screen types, layouts, nomenclature, fonts, and animations were designed and documented to provide high-fidelity graphics and clear, on-brand direction to the user. All controls and interaction patterns were developed to guarantee maximum usability, establishing consistency across Cells, regardless of the individual content. Extensive testing was completed on every detail, in every device, and adjustments made to ensure flawless execution.

frog also worked closely with Alltel to develop the name and identity for Celltop. An application logo was created that incorporates the traditional brand colors and typeface in a new way, the double “l” of Celltop serving as a visual reminder of the Cells themselves.

    Partnerships to Production

To ensure that Alltel would be the first major wireless carrier to introduce a widget dashboard to the mobile device, frog and Alltel set an incredibly fast timetable for implementation, moving Celltop from design to delivery in just twelve months.

To do so, frog facilitated close collaboration between key industry players, including the OEMs that manufacture the devices, QUALCOMM, which manages the relevant programming technology, and Motricity, a content provider which aggregates online data for the mobile platform. Each company’s involvement was essential for making the Celltop application possible, each one expanding and tailoring its own unique technology to create a working system. Phone calls, emails, and meetings occurred on a near-daily basis in order to facilitate information exchange, prioritization, and trouble-shooting. In some cases, physical handsets were actually shipped back and forth, with modifications made by each party.

frog also engaged the services of its partner company, communications software leader Aricent. The lasting strategic relationship between the two companies allowed each to make use of the other’s areas of expertise throughout the Celltop project, balancing the front-end and back-end coding necessary for this streamlined development process. Aricent’s existing knowledge of mobile application development allowed frog to validate ideas more quickly – creating a working prototype almost immediately. Together, frog and Aricent were able to undertake design, development, and testing in a fully integrated manner. The result was a high level of production that secured key stakeholder commitment every step of the way and accelerated Celltop’s time to market.

    Sony Ericsson Announces New Phones

    Sony Ericsson Announces New Phones

Posted by Will on Tuesday, May 8th, 2007 at 11:22 am under Sony Ericsson, Devices, Symbian, Announcements

We got word today that Sony Ericsson isn't stopping with that awesome S500 "not-a-Walkman" Walkman Phone. The company has announced 3 additional handsets - all slated for a 2007 release. The new Sony Ericsson line-up looks pretty impressive - the S500 brings a 2MP shooter, stereo Bluetooth, and EDGE in a sleek, US-bound slider; the US-optimized T250 caters to the entry-level markets; the P1 (umm, P700i?) rocks all those fancy top-end features you've come to expect from Sony Ericsson, but isn't made for the wacky US 3G standard; the T650 and its 3.2MP camera also lacks that 850Mhz band that we Yankees love so much

We've already seen those spy pics of the S500 "non-Walkman" phone, and we expected the thing to come without the Walkman branding, but we didn't expect the device to shed its 3G radios for the US market. The music player won't be the Walkman player, but we think it will do just fine. That slider's beautiful, green illumination is just icing on the cake that is the 2MP camera, stereo Bluetooth, music player, and built-in photo blogging tool. Look for this thing to drop in Q3 of this year.

The other made-for-US device waiting in the wings is the T250 candy-bar. This entry-level phone brings the basic VGA camera, FM radio, and metallic finishes in two dual-band flavors. Expect this to drop in Q3 2007.

For those of you fortunate enough to have access to 900/1800/1900 3G networks (Europe, that means you), Sony Ericsson is blessing you with its pedestal worthy P1. We don't know what happened to the P700i moniker, but it doesn't matter, this thing is a beast! Touchscreen, handwriting recognition, qwerty-keyboard, 3.2MP shooter, WiFi (with VoIP), push email, and stereo Bluetooth are just some of the awesome features on this thing. And, don't forget the 2100Mhz-flavored UMTS radio!

And to keep things balanced, the T650 brings a more modest feature-set to the non-US markets. This device trades the 850Mhz band for an auto-focus 3.2MP shooter and 2100Mhz UMTS radio.

Way to keep us on our toes, Sony Ericsson. Well done.

New Sony Ericsson Walkman Phone( Slider)

New Sony Ericsson Walkman Phone (Shinobu?) Slider Coming Soon

Just a little over a week ago Sony Ericsson announced a number of really cool new phones.

And now it looks that more Sony Ericsson phones are coming - the pictures of new Sony Ericsson Walkman Slider phone started surfacing in Eastern Europe.

First - JUSTAMP published a number of live pics taken in the shop of Polish cellphone retailer Art Kom GSM Group:

    sony-ericsson-walkman-phone-slider.jpg

Then Hungarian site Terminal.hu came up with more detailed specs and expected price ($550) for this SE Walkman Slider:

    2 mpx camera
    2.4″, 320×240 px 262K QVGA display
    UMTS/HSDPA connectivity
    12.5 mm thick

    sony-ericsson-walkman-phone-slider-open.jpg

Given that the live phone already surfaced at retailer shop, I think it should be safe to expect the official launch pretty soon.

And there was one other SE phone missing from the last announcement - 5 megapixel Sony Ericsson K850i Cybershot that we have been waiting for a few months now.

    sony ericsson PXi…

Designer Bogar Bense introduced a concept of a mobile phone SE PXi…

    se-pxi12.jpg

The developer of this Sony Ericsson mobile phone concept believes that his gadget is designed in such a way that it should be comfortable in using for right-hander as well left-hander. The mobile concept is equipped with 3,3-inch touch display, which supports the automatic orientation when the phone is being turned. One can use a stylus or fingers. Also among the other characteristics of SE PXi we should mention: 2 slots for memory cards, 5-Mp Cybershot camera and stereo speakers. So far it is only a concept under Sony Ericsson brand name.
